The pandemic certainly had an impact on the way we use spaces. As a student at Columbia College Chicago, I began to reflect on the way the pandemic changed learning and working at Columbia. As a result, I developed a spatial solution for the 9th floor of the 623 building that includes learning, working, and service spaces.

The common use of glass/curtain walls throughout my space inspired me to think of my space as a fish tank/ ocean. The connection between a fish tank and a college is in a fish tank there are different types of fish with different colors and identities similar to a college setting. In a college students from different backgrounds and identities come together to collaborate in one space. The school of fish represents a school with students. Also, there is something about the elements in a fish tank that make it feel relaxing, so I wanted that aspect to reciprocate in my space. After, the pandemic people want comfortable work environments. The bright colors in a fish tank are perfect for young students at an art school. A fish tank has many qualities that would enhance the aesthetic of the space. For example, the natural patterns and textures in the ocean can be used to develop the design of the space. Water also provides an extremely relaxing noise, which will be incorporated into my space as white noise. My concept will combine many elements found in a fish tank/ ocean to create a beautiful and coherent space.
